The City of God: Reflections for Lent 2009
by Joshua Casteel
Ash Wednesday is February 25, 2009.

As Christians, writer and conscientious objector Joshua Casteel asserts, our first and only true allegiance is to the City of God. As we journey through Lent, Casteel invites us to ask how “borderless followers of a crucified peasant might reimagine a City of God. . .” Through Scripture and daily reflections, we remember how to build and live in this City. The City of God is our path to true freedom, to love, to reconciliation, to self-giving, risk, and intimacy with God. This Lent, are we prepared to change our lives to truly become co-creators of the City of God?

Be Not Afraid:
An Alternative to the "War on Terror"
by Tom Cordaro

Grounded in history and a faith tradition, this new book invites us to overcome the narrative of fear in our country promoted by the “War on Terror” and the attacks of September 11, 2001. Instead, we are called to embrace an alternative narrative of hope and freedom. This alternative requires that we, as individuals and as community members, act to reclaim the civic and religious principles at the core of our national story, principles that can build genuine peace rooted in justice at home and around the world. As author Tom Cordaro urges, “It is time for us to begin the hard work of restoring that which has been taken from us and of recovering all those ideals and values that have been lost.” Can we dare to be truly free?

An Immigrant's Prayer
Written by Remigio Hernandez, an immigrant to the United States, this prayer asks for God’s blessings upon all who cross borders, especially immigrants, giving thanks because God walks always "with those who cross borders, in search of well-being, doing their part in building the world you entrusted to us." In both English and Spanish, with reflection questions in English.
