Be Watchful and Alert--Seek God's Spirit in Our World:
Reflections for Advent 2008

by Sr. Jamie Phelps, O.P., Ph.D.

During Advent we are called to be watchful and alert and to seek God—the risen Christ and the Holy Spirit—in the ordinary circumstances of our lives. All too often we humans are so preoccupied by the signs of evil and despair (e.g., the violence, hatred, and division that permeate our world) that we fail to see the signs of goodness and hope (e.g., God’s healing presence and love), mediated by people who live in communion with God and others. Our God is indeed a loving God who asks us to see with the eyes of faith, love with hearts of compassion, and act with a spirit of hope and trust in Divine forgiveness and justice; God asks us to be people of forgiveness, love, compassion, and justice. Through our Advent scriptural prayer, may we become more attentive to God’s Spirit in the world and renew our commitment to live in such a way that we become a sacramental people who mediate Christ’s peace, hope, healing, and unity in a divided world! Reflections based on the daily lectionary readings. Full-color cover illustration by Jim Hasse, S.J.

Be Not Afraid:
An Alternative to the "War on Terror"
by Tom Cordaro

Grounded in history and a faith tradition, this new book invites us to overcome the narrative of fear in our country promoted by the “War on Terror” and the attacks of September 11, 2001. Instead, we are called to embrace an alternative narrative of hope and freedom. This alternative requires that we, as individuals and as community members, act to reclaim the civic and religious principles at the core of our national story, principles that can build genuine peace rooted in justice at home and around the world. As author Tom Cordaro urges, “It is time for us to begin the hard work of restoring that which has been taken from us and of recovering all those ideals and values that have been lost.” Can we dare to be truly free?

An Immigrant's Prayer
Written by Remigio Hernandez, an immigrant to the United States, this prayer asks for God’s blessings upon all who cross borders, especially immigrants, giving thanks because God walks always "with those who cross borders, in search of well-being, doing their part in building the world you entrusted to us." In both English and Spanish, with reflection questions in English.
